Project Description

This collaborative project, developed in partnership with Ontario Tech University’s Faculty of Social Science and Humanities and Durham College, focused on creating an accessible online resource to inform the public about the development of policies surrounding Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) and other AI-based tools used by police in Canada. The website serves as a centralized platform to help users navigate key policy documents that shape how these technologies are governed—emphasizing the protection of human rights, civil liberties, and privacy. It also includes a repository of statements and policies released by Ontario police services in response to public concern. The design prioritizes transparency, accessibility, and informed civic engagement, supporting efforts for public oversight and responsible implementation of emerging surveillance technologies.

Role

As the team leader for this project, I was responsible for overseeing the entire development process and ensuring smooth coordination among our five-member team. I assigned tasks based on individual strengths, maintained consistent communication, and ensured deadlines were met. My key contributions included formatting and organizing the content for clarity, resolving design issues for better functionality, and refining the overall aesthetic to create a clean, accessible, and user-friendly interface. I played a central role in aligning the project's technical and visual elements with its purpose of promoting transparency and public awareness around the use of facial recognition technologies.

Deliverables

The final deliverables for the project included a fully designed and functional multi-page website titled Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) Information Hub. It featured a responsive Home Page, an organized Resource Library with categorized documents, an About Page detailing the mission and context, a Results Page for individual articles and findings, and Learn More Page allowing users to explore FRT types and related topics. The website adhered to Ontario Tech University’s brand identity through its color scheme and layout while prioritizing accessibility, clear navigation, and a professional aesthetic to support informed public engagement.
